A Counterbalance forklift is a forklift together with a weight which counters the balance, allowing the load's weight to be spread evenly across the forklift arms. Counterbalance forklifts are designed so the weight on the lift is counterbalanced by the weight behind the centre of gravity. The load is projected out from the front of the machinery so it is visible to the operator of the forklift. This particular kind of forklift truck must just be used on level, stable ground or on a prepared surface.

Training is required for forklift drivers to know the right method to spread the load evenly across the forklift arms. Trainees will learn how to raise and lower the load vertically and how to tilt the forklift mast both backwards and forwards between 5 and 15 degrees.
